Five things I love about Amsterdam

by Ismini Moustafelou

''Amsterdam is the city i love most in the Netherlands. Just one hour away from my city, Amsterdam has plenty to offer: beautiful and colourful parks, different cultural activities varying from artistic exhibitions to electronic music festivals, cafes and of course the picturesque canals.

 1. Rijksmuseum
This emblematic building established in 1800 is located in the south of the city center. Its collection includes more than 3000 paintings. A section with Asian pieces covers a notable part of the museum. The library of Rijksmuseum is known for the extensive catalogue of art history books. In front of the south side of the building lies the famous Musseumplein, a square where different kinds of events happen throughout a year.

2. Vondelpark
A few meters away from Rijksmuseum lies the famous park of Amsterdam: green but also blue because of the canals that are always present in this city. Usually a lot of open air festivals or exhibitions take place. The park is suitable for tourists who want to ride a bike in a less crowded environment, as bike paths are expanded in the entire park's area.

3. Canals
Canals, canals, canals everywhere! Amsterdam besides is well known for its numerous canals. In Kings day (Koningsdag) celebrated on 27th April traffic jams are noticed by boats that carry people partying. That day the city is full of people dressed in orange (Netherland's national colour) as many live events such as live concerts and parades are held to celebrate the birth of the King.

4. Café de Jaren
If you want a calm place with a canal view, enjoy your coffee and take a rest from walking around the city then ''Café de Jaren'' is your place! Close to Amstel Canal, this cafe is expanded in two areas: a large interior hall with front windows offering a beautiful view in winter and an open air site by the canal,  perfect for warm days. Highly recommended for any time of the year!

5. Nutella Bakery by Nutella
For the fans of Nutella products this is a must visit spot in Amsterdam! The bakery apart from the famous Praline based products sells fresh ice creams macarons, coffees, milkshakes, juices, waffles and crepes at reasonable prices.
p.s. calories don't count at Nutella Bakery!
